Diversion of flight fails to save passenger from Ireland

A flight from Melbourne to Qatar was diverted to India on Wednesday, in a desperate attempt to save an Irish man on board.

The man, Raymond McMorrow, 68, is believed to have had a heart attack on board Qatar Airways flight QR 031 while in transit from Melbourne to Doha, the Qatar capital.

The Qatar Airways plane landed without incident at Cochin Airport, in southern India, where an ambulance was waiting. Mr McMorrow was rushed to the Little Flower Hospital at Angamaly, in Kerala. Despite efforts by doctors to revive him, Mr McMorrow was declared dead soon after his arrival at the hospital.

Ireland's embassy in New Delhi is assisting the McMorrow family in arranging to repatriate his body.

"Qatar Airways flight QR 031 travelling from Melbourne to Doha on May 21 was diverted to Cochin in Southern India due to a medical emergency on board. Upon arrival, a passenger was rushed to a local hospital where sadly he passed away," a statement issued by Qatar Airways said.

"Qatar Airways sends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased," the statement added.
