New Iceland eruption could stop airlines
Irish Sun Friday 2nd December, 2011
Another Icelandic volcano eruption has been predicted by vulcanologists.
Katla, in the south of the country, has experienced more than 500 tremors in just over a month.
The increase in seismic activity is beginning to concern Icelandic officials, who are worried there could be another major disruption to European air traffic.
Katla, which has an enormous six mile crater, normally shows increased activity over a 40 to 80 year cycle.
The last major eruption on Katla was in 1918, when it melted glaciers and caused enormous floods.
Experts have warned when Katla does blow, it could be the most powerful volcanic eruption in almost a century.
