UNITED NATIONS - African Union mediator Thabo Mbeki urged the UN Security Council to stop the fighting between Sudan and South Sudan amid reports of fresh fighting between the neighbours to take control of their contested border.
Mbeki, in closed-door discussions with the Security Council via videoconference, warned that both countries are locked in a "logic of war" with the hardliners in control.
The two countries are locked in fighting with Sudan trying to remove the forces of South Sudan from its Heglig oil field.
South Sudan, which broke away last July to become the world's newest nation, sent its forces to Heglig last Tuesday.
Sudan responded on Friday with massive aerial bombardment of the town.
The crisis threatens to turn into an all-out war with South Sudan still in control of Heglig.
Susan Rice, US ambassador to the UN and the present Security Council president, said that Security Council members have promised to urgently discuss the crisis, and also examine the possibility of imposing sanctions.
According to Rice, Mbeki, along with UN envoy Haile Menkerios, described the situation as "disturbing in which both sides are locked in, and I quote, 'a logic of war'".
