Irish Sun (IANS) Thursday 10th May, 2012

Five people died Thursday due to toxic gas poisoning in an abandoned antimony ore mine in China, officials said.

The incident took place in Dushan county of Qiannan in Guizhou province, Xinhua reported.

A county official said three villagers entered the mine for illegal mining.

After they passed out, another villager posted as a lookout went back to their village and attempted a rescue. However, three rescuers also found themselves trapped after entering the mine.

After 10 hours of rescue efforts, one villager was rescued alive but the other five died.
