Four killed in huge Colombo blast

Irish Sun (IANS) Wednesday 2nd January, 2008

At least four people were killed and about 20 injured when a powerful bomb exploded during morning rush hour in the heart of the Sri Lankan capital Wednesday.

An army spokesman told IANS that it wasn't clear immediately if it was just a bomb or a suicide bomber was involved. 'But it was certainly a bomb,' he said.

The deafening explosion, heard in a wide area, occurred near Nippon hotel, a heritage property that was featured in the Hollywood movie 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'.

The blast site is at a tri-junction from where one road leads to the Sri Lanka Army headquarters. A family of Indian origin settled in Sri Lanka owns the hotel.

Witnesses said there was a lot of traffic on the road and shops were beginning to open when the bomb went off.
