Almost 35% of births in Q3 2010 to unmarried parents

Almost 35% of all babies born between July and September last year were to unmarried parents, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).The latest data also show that of the 19,171 newborns in that period, Meath recorded the highest birth rate of 23.2 per 1,000 of population, while Limerick city recorded the lowest birth rate of 11.0 per 1,000 of population.The data also highlights cancer as the leading cause of death among 45 to 74 years olds, while accidents and suicides account for the highest number of deaths in the 15 to 44 age group. Some 7,787 couples tied the knot over the three-month period, which is traditionally the most popular time of the year to hold a wedding.
