Lottery grant to fund Irish in Birmingham research project

THE IRISH experience in Birmingham will be documented in a new research project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.A 45,000 grant has been awarded to the city's Irish Welfare and Information Centre (IWIC) to undertake an oral history project capturing childhood experiences of Irish people living in Birmingham between 1960 and 2010.The project will record the memories of five people born in each of the five decades and explore their influences and connections to the wider Irish community.Researchers will also analyse the effect of two major events within the city on its Irish contingent -- the John F Kennedy memorial, funded and championed by the Irish community of the 60s, and the Birmingham bombings in 1974.IWIC will be seeking volunteers to help with the project and people keen to share...
