News Corp's Oz unit chairman John Hartigan resigns

Irish Sun (ANI) Wednesday 9th November, 2011

News Corp boss Rupert Murdoch has announced that John Hartigan, chairman and chief executive officer of the company's Australian arm, will step down by the end of the month as a part of a major reshuffle at the media firm.

"John's decision will end a distinguished 41-year career with News in which he has given us exemplary service and incredible leadership," Murdoch said.

"Few people have contributed as much as John to the quality of journalism in Australia. He has earned enormous respect among both colleagues and competitors," he added.

According to the Age, Murdoch, the dominant controlling shareholder and chairman of News Corp, will replace Hartigan by the Foxtel chief executive, Kim Williams.

Hartigan said in a statement that he was extremely proud of being a part of News Limited.

"I am immensely proud of News. I am privileged to have worked for such a great company. I want to thank the many colleagues that have helped, encouraged, inspired and challenged me to be the best I can be," he said.

The removal of News Corp's most senior executive in Australia comes amid a turmoil for the company, which has seen its British division, News International, come under intense scrutiny over the phone hacking scandal that led to the closure of Sunday Tabloid News of the World.

The announcement came after the close of trade on the Australian stock exchange, with News Ltd shares closing flat at 17.12 dollars. ANI
