Irish Sun Monday 29th June, 2009

64-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, has had another appeal rejected by Myanmar's highest court .

The court has rejected an appeal to reinstate two key witnesses in the trial against Ms Suu Kyi that could send her to prison for five years.

She is charged with violating the terms of her house arrest by allowing an American man to stay in her house, after he swam secretly to her lakeside property.

Ms Suu Kyi will now be allowed only two defence witnesses when her trial resumes Friday.

The court allowed 14 prosecution witnesses to testify.

Ms Suu Kyi’s first witness on Friday will testify before the District Court from inside Insein prison.

The second witness, Khin Moe Moe, is a lawyer and member of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy.

The rejected witnesses are Win Tin, a prominent former journalist and ex-political prisoner, who is known to have been critical of the government and Tin Oo, the party's deputy leader, who is also under house arrest.
