DONEGAL, Ireland - With enough happening on day one of the Donegal International Rally to get the adrenalin pumping for everyone in attendance, Gardai said that they had made 20 arrests.
According to officials, those arrested on Friday night and on Saturday morning will face charges of drink driving, public order offenses and motoring offenses.
The 20 people were arrested in Letterkenny, where thousands of people from all over the world had gathered to view the Donegal International Rally which began on Friday afternoon and concludes on Sunday evening.
Gardai noted that the Port Road and Main Street were blocked off on Friday night and only taxi drivers were allowed through the town's main thoroughfare.
The same settings will be in place on Saturday night too, gardai said.
Further, the whole town, especially along the Port Road and Main Street areas, was covered with a huge blanket of security due to a large garda presence.
Garda Inspector Michael Harrison was quoted as saying that while it was a busy night in the Cathedral Town, the vast majority of those who had come for the rally were extremely well behaved.
He added, “While we had 20 arrests for various offences, the large numbers were extremely mannerly and courteous towards the gardai. Tonight is going to be another busy night and we are expecting something similar in terms of arrests. Again, we would appeal to everyone to obey the rules of the road, leave the rallying to the experts in the rally and co-operate with the gardai who are there to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend in Letterkenny.”
