DONEGAL, Ireland - Two people were rescued after the car they were traveling in left the road and entered the water close to Sully Bridge.
The car, a Nissan Qashkai, that was travelling on the main road between Porthall and St Johnston, crashed into the Swilly Burn river near Porthall in Lifford on Saturday evening.
The car left the road before turning on its roof as it entered the river and becoming submerged.
The couple, who are in their 60s, were reportedly saved after two passers-by, who managed to pull them from their car.
However their family pet, a golden retriever, which was out of the car before it went into the water, is still missing.
Emergency services from both sides of the border including the Rescue 118 helicopter arrived on the scene.
Subsequently, the couple, that were rushed to the Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry for treatment are said to be battling for their lives.
Gardai are still trying to determine the cause of the crash.
Garda Inspector Michael Harrison said, “At this stage, we are still keeping an open mind on the cause of the crash. We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area and witnessed the car leaving the road and entering the water to get in touch.”
