DUBLIN, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Irish government announced on Monday that it will provide assistance to Lebanon in response to the worsening COVID-19 situation there.
A donation of 16,500 packs of safety needles and 16,400 syringes will leave Ireland on Monday, said the government in a statement, adding that these items will help the COVID-19 vaccination program in Lebanon.
This support is part of the coordinated effort by the European Union (EU) member states currently underway to provide a collaborative response following Lebanon's request for assistance, said the statement.
"The pandemic has taught us the importance of working together, at home and abroad. Ireland has a strong and longstanding relationship with Lebanon, and we stand in solidarity with them as they face the COVID-19 crisis," Colm Brophy, Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs with responsibility for Overseas Development Aid and Diaspora, said in the statement.
Previous donations to assist with the COVID-19 response have also been coordinated and dispatched to India, Nepal and Brazil from Ireland under the European Civil Protection Mechanism in recent months, said the statement.
