DUBLIN, Ireland: Ireland has the ability to care for 200,000 refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine, according to Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue.
Ireland has no option but to "reach out to those of our fellow European citizens who are displaced who have nowhere else to go," said McConalogue, as quoted by the Irish Times. "We have to do our best."
Currently, various ministries within the Irish government Government are jointly working to prepare listings of accommodations, along with resources to ensure refugees arriving in Ireland are provided with healthcare and education, he said.
To date, 10,000 refugees have arrived in Ireland.
McConalogue noted that the Irish public has been very enthusiastic in volunteering to take in Ukrainian refugees.
"The combined speed and scale of this movement is unprecedented in recent memory," said Matthew Saltmarsh of the refugee agency, as reported by the Irish Times. "In Ukraine, our priority has been to scale up our presence and operations in central and western regions, where conditions enable better humanitarian access, and needs are rapidly growing as people evacuate west and move across borders."
