DUBLIN, Ireland: Officials have confirmed that the first dwarf sperm whale has washed up on the shores of Ireland.
The announcement was made by the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG).
The whale apparently became stranded and died off of Glengarriff, Co Cork earlier this month.
The whale measured 2.25m when examined at the Regional Veterinary Laboratory in Cork. Additionally, it was pregnant and there were no indications as to why it died.
Officials said the dwarf sperm whale is normally found in tropical and temperate zones.
The dwarf sperm whale is so rare that it has never been seen in Ireland, while there has been only one sighting of a dwarf sperm whale in the UK, off Cornwall in October 2011.
The IWDG says it "remains to be seen" whether more dwarf sperm whales will be found off Ireland if ocean waters continues to warm.
The skeleton is to be delivered to the National Museum of Ireland - Natural History in Dublin, said officials.
