The Coast Guard launched search and rescue crews that afternoon and alerted nearby ships.
A cargo ship later saw a person in the water. some 20 miles south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana and the mouth of the Mississippi River, said Coast Guard Lt. Seth Gross.
He added that after the man was hoisted into a helicopter about 8:25 p.m., the man confirmed he was the missing cruise ship passenger.
In an interview with WWL-TV, Gross said, "He appeared to be suffering from mild hypothermia, shock, dehydration, but his condition overall appeared stable."
The rescue was "a miracle, especially on a holiday like Thanksgiving," he added, noting that the man was taken for medical care.
In a statement, Carnival Cruise Line said, "We greatly appreciate the efforts of all, most especially the U.S. Coast Guard and the mariner who spotted the guest in the water.
