DUBLIN, Ireland: Punters, the local term for those who place bets on sports, elections, and anything that can be wagered on, are now taking 6 to 4 odds that there will be a white Christmas in Ireland this year.
However, the official Christmas day forecast is not promising.
Still, according to officials at Ladbrokes Bookmakers, there has been an upswing among the public who are betting on enjoying a white Christmas.
As of this week, odds makers say there is only a 6 to 4 chance that it will snow anywhere in Ireland on Christmas Day, but there is also uncertainty about the forecast, according to bookies.
Currently, the odds that Dublin will have snow on Christmas are 5 to 1 against.
"Since The Late Late Toy Show last Friday, it seems punters are very much in the festive spirit. So much so, we have been snowed under with bets on a white Christmas and the odds suggest punters could get their wish," said Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes Bookmakers, as quoted by the Irish Mirror.
Ireland's official weather agency, Met Eireann, has stated that in the week leading up to Christmas Day it appears that rainfall will be lower than normal.
"Looking further ahead to week 4, uncertainty in the forecast grows," Met Eireann said.
"Again, there is little signal in the way of dominant pressure patterns establishing, though rainfall amounts are expected to be lower than normal for the time of year."
Ominously, there is no mention of snow in official forecasts for the month of December.
