LENNOX HEAD, Australia - An Irish father died in Australia while trying to save his daughter after she was swept out to sea near Lennox Head in New South Wales.
According to local police, a couple was enjoying the beach with their three children when their daughter was swept out to sea on a bodyboard while they were only in shallow water.
The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 19, and it is believed that the man swam to her aid before getting himself into trouble.
According to a police report, the 45-year-old man and his wife swam out to their daughter, and while the mother safely returned her child to shore, the father could not make it.
Two police officers who arrived on the scene entered the water in search of the man but were unsuccessful. His body was discovered thirty minutes later by surf lifesavers.
The man was given CPR by paramedics, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, the woman and her daughter were treated by paramedics and were sent home.
The family is from Lennox Head, according to local police, and officers from the Richmond Police District have notified the Irish Consulate of the man's death.
An investigation into the incident is underway, and local police are asking anyone with information to call them at 1800 333 000.
