DUBLIN, Ireland: Ireland reported that wind generated 41 percent of the nation's electricity in January.
Additionally, the average wholesale price of electricity in Ireland fell over 100 euros in January to 162 euros per megawatt hour, compared to December's average of 276.52 euros.
Wind farms in Ireland provided 1,479 gigawatt-hours of electricity in January, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 320,000 Irish families.
"Wind energy was Ireland's number one source of electricity. We need to accelerate the delivery of new wind farms and to do this we need the Government to invest in our planning system," said Noel Cunniffe, CEO of Wind Energy Ireland, as quoted by the Irish Examiner.
The lowest price for electricity in Ireland in January was 133.69 euros per megawatt-hour of electricity, rising to 196.41 euros on days when fossil fuels, rather than wind, was used to generate electricity.
"Our families, communities and businesses will remain vulnerable to extreme electricity prices while we are forced to depend on imported fossil fuels. The quicker we can build wind farms and reinforce the electricity grid, the more we can do to help consumers," Cunniffee added.
