DUBLIN, Ireland: Local authorities throughout Ireland are set to spend 350 million euros to house the country's homeless in 2023, according to a recently released report.
This is an increase of 50 million euros over 2022.
The report was released during a seminar hosted this week by Focus Ireland. It was also disclosed that some 80 percent of funding will be spent on emergency accommodation.
In presenting the figures at the seminar, Professor Eoin O'Sullivan of Trinity College Dublin said a breakdown on spending saw 250 million euros for housing the homeless in Dublin and some 100 million euros outside the capital.
It was also reported that some 140 million euros was spent on private sector housing last year. Additionally, the average cost of maintaining a household is 35,000 to 40,000 euros per year.
The figures were documented in a report by Focus Ireland, entitled Public Expenditure on Services for Households Experiencing Homelessness, written by O'Sullivan, who is professor of Social Policy, along with others.
O'Sullivan took note of the anticipated spending in 2023, saying it was"a very considerable increase,"considering that spending on homeless services throughout Ireland in 2014 was 70 million euros.
