Co Donegal, Ireland - President Michael D Higgins told the National Famine Commemoration that Ireland has a moral obligation to honor its commitments to vulnerable and displaced people seeking asylum and refuge on its shores.
At a commemoration event in Milford, Co Donegal, he said the parallels with the famine-caused mass displacement 175 years ago must not be overlooked.
Hundreds attended the wreath-laying ceremony and military honors at the old workhouse and graveyard outside town.
For the people of Donegal and beyond, the event was seen as a chance to reflect on and remember all those who suffered or died during the Great Famine.
The President stated that the location of the old workhouse in Milford was appropriate given the adversity endured by the people of Donegal in the face of poverty, hunger, and emigration throughout the nineteenth century, particularly during the Great Hunger.
From 1846 to 1851, an estimated 40,000 people died or emigrated from Co Donegal alone.
