DUBLIN, Ireland: Dublin saw a nearly 8 percent increase in population, rising by 90,040 residents from 2016 to 2022, according to census officials.
In 2016, Dublin had a population of 1,173,179 compared to 1,263,219 in 2022.
Additionally, Ireland reports that the town of Blackwood in Co Kildare has become the fastest growing community in the country, having doubled its population in six years.
Blackwood, also known as Coill Dubh, is 15 kilometers north of Naas and 40 kilometers from Dublin.
In the 2016 census, Blackwood's population was 746. By April 2022 it had risen to 1,476.
Of note, Dunshaughlin in Co Meath reported a 65 percent jump in its population, from 4,035 in 2016 to 6,644 in 2022; Lahinch in Co Clare rose by 60 percent, from 638 to 1,018; and Greencastle, Co Donegal, saw a 53 percent increase from 831 to 1,268.
Further, according to location intelligence company Gamma, towns in Ireland with populations of 1,000 or greater saw significant growth, after stagnating during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Country-wide there was an increase in the population of 8 percent in the census, to reach a post-independence high of 5,149,139.
Within Dublin, the fastest population increase occurred in Newcastle, growing by 46 percent.
Further, Cork city increased by 6.6 percent, from 208,669 to 222,526; Limerick city from 94,192 to 102,287, an increase of 8.5 per cent; and Galway city rose by 7.5 per cent, from 79,934 to 85,910.
