DUBLIN, Ireland: The owners of the Cadbury brand, Mondelēz Europe, have expressed grave concerns over rodent migration from an apartment block construction site to its chocolate production plant in Coolock, Dublin.
The owners of the Cadbury brand were referring to a four 10-storey apartment block scheme on lands adjacent to its chocolate production plant in Coolock, Dublin 17.
Cadbury produces some of its best-known chocolate brands, including Twirl, Flake, Boost, and Cadbury Dairy Milk, at the Coolock plant.
Late last year, London-based Platinum Lands Ltd lodged Large Scale Residential Developments (LRD) plans to Dublin City Council for the 621 units at the former Chivers Factory, Coolock Drive, Coolock.
In a submission to the Council, planning consultants Cunnane Stratton Reynolds stated that they were concerned about rodent migration onto their client's site during the demolition and construction phase.
The submission stated, "this is particularly a concern for a food processing facility of national significance and standing".
The consultants said this should be a key part of the required Construction and Demolition Waste Management Plan for the application.
The submission stated that Cadbury Ireland has operated in the country since 1933, and the Coolock factory has been in operation since 1956, serving the company for almost 70 years.
Cunnane Stratton Reynolds said the factory runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and told the council that if planning permission is granted, the factory's operations must not be affected by future residents raising noise complaints.
The submission stated that any planning conditions must ensure proper noise control for the new development without harming the factory's ongoing operations.
A planning report from Stephen Little & Associates for the applicants said the proposed 621 homes on residentially zoned land in Dublin and its suburbs would help increase housing supply during the current housing crisis.
The report said the project is well designed, provides sustainable density, and follows national planning guidelines.
It also noted that planning permission granted in 2019 allowed for 550 apartments with building heights of six to 10 storeys.
The report said the new plan keeps the maximum height at 10 storeys and increases the number of units by only 13 percent.
The council has asked for more information on the planning application.
