DUBLIN, Ireland: Dublin has unveiled a new 5.5 million euro cycle track along the south quays, enhancing safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians in the city center.
The 1km route, stretching from George's Quay to Aston Quay, features a segregated cycle lane, widened footpaths, and upgraded junctions to improve mobility. The project, completed ahead of schedule, was officially opened this week by Lord Mayor Emma Blain.
Blain welcomed the project as a major step towards a more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly Dublin.
"This project enables more people to walk, wheel, and cycle safely and efficiently in the city center," she said. "By giving more space to active travel, we are connecting communities while improving the cityscape."
Dublin City Council confirmed that the final cost of the project came in 18 percent under budget, with construction beginning in March 2024 and finishing ahead of schedule.
Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien highlighted the project's broader impact, emphasizing its benefits for commuters, public health, and sustainability.
"Investments in projects like this bring substantial benefits to society, public health, and the environment," he said. "Most importantly, they contribute to reducing carbon emissions, supporting a more sustainable future."
